Character Traits

The first of the year is always a time of looking inward--self-evaluation.  The fact is, we all have things that we do not like about ourselves.  Most commonly, we describe them as "character flaws".  Perhaps, we should ask ourselves if these attributes are really flawed or is it more accurate that our use of them is where we err.  Sometimes, I think it is the way we exert these quirks that determine what we do and do not like about ourselves as well as how others view us and how we view them.   Also, keep in mind that an imbalance of these qualities can be taken to the extreme and most certainly become flawed.  Some examples:

  1. Determination ® Strong-willed, stubbornness
  2. Humility ® low self-esteem
  3. Meekness ® weakness
  4. Organized ® obsessive
  5. Leadership skills ® controlling, bossy
Most of these idiosyncrasies should be viewed as strengths rather than weaknesses.  In the appropriate settings and with the appropriate audiences, these are the things that should help us advance rather than allowing them to hold us back--to bolster us rather than crippling us.

David blessed the Lord in saying, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."  Joyce Meyer often tells of a time in her life when she truly started believing this about herself.  She states she had to "get it down in her gut."  To know that she knows that she knows.  Meyer explains how she did it.  She would stand in front of a mirror and encourage herself by saying things like, "God loves me.  He has a purpose for me.  I like myself.  I like those quirky things about me."  Do you remember Al Franken as Stuart Smalley on Saturday Night Live?  His catch-phrase was, "I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog-gone it, people like me."

Not only should we apply this thought process to ourselves, but also to those around us.  Maybe someone in your family seems to always want to do just the opposite of everyone in the group.  Are they just trying to be difficult or are they just different in the way they see the world?  Different tastes, different comfort zones, different attitudes all make us unique.  Everyone likes different.  While we like to have common interests, we are attracted to those who are not exactly as we are, those who react differently, even those who behave differently.  It's what makes our world so very colorful.

He made us each unique, special.  Embrace your character.  Hone it for positive outcomes.  Find the balance that makes you an asset.  Love who God made YOU to be. So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be YOU.  Afterall, you're the only one who can be, and in being yourself you can help someone so much more than if you try to be them.  They made need that special thing about you.  You can be strong in areas where they are weak.

Besides, who are we to criticize the Creator?  Isaiah 29:16, "You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, 'You did not make me?' Can the pot say to the potter, 'You know nothing?' "

Let's determine to see ourselves as God sees us.  We are a work in progress, but I am so thankful He is the Potter and I am the clay.

Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.  “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.  Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool."

Christmas Without Santa?

As a Christian, yes, yes, yes, a thousand times, yes! Don't get me wrong. It's not a "bah humbug" kind of thing. I love, love, love Christmas! It truly does seem to be the most wonderful time of the year!  What is not wonderful, however, is the slow fade over the years from a celebration of the life of Christ to the greedy commercialism, secular "holiday" traditions that completely omit even the name of Jesus. We have found ourselves in a time where nativity scenes are prohibited and replaced with the jolly, fat guy and his little minions. Where have we gone wrong? We Christians claim to live lives completely dedicated to Christ, 100% sold out to His will and His plan, yet at the time of the celebration of His birth, we are so preoccupied with everything else that we often don't even take the time to read and pray--we are just too busy. Rather than being a light, an example of the life we are supposedly celebrating, we are too busy to help others, hoa

Trees Are Trees

Source Unknown "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then, God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light." Genesis 1:1-3 Creation was a six-day process that began and ended with the spoken word of God. He created the heavens and the earth, dry land and the seas, vegetation, seed-bearing plants, and trees on fruit-bearing land. He created seasons, living creatures, and man. Our Creator then rested on the seventh day, the day of fulfillment, the completion of His perfect plan. In one of my favorite passages in Genesis, the scripture depicts the scene of the "Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day." Can you picture it? The Creator walking through His very own creation in the early evening enjoying the brilliant, colorful flowers with their fragrance lingering in the air. The reg

Porcupine

Photo by Vadym “The porcupine, whom one must handle gloved, may be respected, but never loved.”               ~Arthur Guiterman Those who know me, even those who have followed my blogs, know I have struggled in relationships. Though it is true, many of the hellacious, short-lived relationships were the result of simply picking the wrong people--whether romantic relationships, friendships, even mentors. For this reason, it is particularly important to pray about every aspect of your life, not just "the big things." In all actuality, the simplest details overlooked can thrust you into the most difficult and most painful situations from which to extricate yourself. Often, this is where we experience being blind-sided. Through these tumultuous times, as we all do, I have developed a defense mechanism that I only discovered in the past few weeks. In my prayer time, a revelation came to me so clearly, I may as well have been hit by a lightning bolt! Have mercy, I am a po
